Dear Renavida Community,
As a Dental Hygienist and Advisor for Renavida, I want to take a moment to highlight the crucial connection between oral health and your overall well-being, especially when it comes to recovering from major surgeries like a kidney transplant. According to a study conducted at Yonsei University Dental Hospital, a total of 418 patients were scheduled to receive either a liver transplant or a kidney transplant. The study showed that the oral hygiene status of organ transplant recipients was generally poor. Most patients who receive organ transplants require immunosuppressive drugs thereafter making them vulnerable to infection after dental treatment. Post-transplant prosthetic treatment can improve quality of life by enhancing the capacity for oral intake. Post-transplant dental treatment can be undertaken once the general health of a patient has improved. The university recommends that patients scheduled to receive an organ transplant should be referred to a dental clinic as soon as possible beforehand for the removal of any potential sources of oral infection. The Importance of Regular Dental Check-Ups

Like other areas of the body, the mouth is full of germs. Those germs are mostly harmless. But the mouth is the entry to the digestive tract. The mouth also is the entry to the organs that allow breathing, called the respiratory tracts. This is why germs in the mouth can lead to disease throughout the body. (2)
A consistent hygienic oral routine is an essential for everyone. Regular dental check-ups, ideally twice a year, are essential for maintaining a healthy mouth and preventing dental issues that could lead to bigger health concerns. For kidney transplant patients, this becomes even more significant. Healthy oral hygiene practices and routine dental care are not just about keeping your smile bright – they play a vital role in both your prevention and your recovery process. Studies show that individuals with healthy mouths and low levels of oral inflammation tend to recover better from surgeries, including kidney transplants.
How Oral Health Affects Kidney Transplant Recovery
- Reduced Infection Risk: Inflammation in the gums or mouth can lead to bacteria entering the bloodstream, potentially leading to infections. For transplant patients, who need to maintain a strong immune system, infections can be dangerous and may interfere with healing.
- Faster Healing: By keeping inflammation under control through proper dental care, your body can focus its energy on healing after surgery, rather than fighting off additional infections or complications.
- Stronger Immune System: A healthy mouth supports a stronger immune response, which is vital for organ transplant success. Oral bacteria can affect your overall immune system and may hinder your body’s ability to accept the transplant.

Good Oral Care Begins Here:
- Visit Your Dentist Regularly: Schedule your professional dental exams and cleanings at least twice per year. Early detection of dental issues allows for prompt treatment, preventing complications before they arise.
- Maintain Daily Oral Care: Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush, floss at least once daily, and use a mouthwash that supports gum health. These simple steps can go a long way in reducing the risk of infection.
3. Monitor for Changes: Be vigilant for signs of gum disease, such as bleeding, swelling, or persistent bad breath. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your dentist promptly.
